Description
Summary:The last three decades of the debate on Vatican II can be summarized in three moments: 1) the Extraordinary Synod of 1985 and ist statements on the relationship between letter and spirit of Vatican II and the direction given by the council to the Church; 2) the last twenty years of John Paul II's pontificate with an increasingly "nominalistic" attitude towards Vatican II in the pope's teaching; 3) the great wave of historical and theological studies on Vatican II between the end of the 1980s and the early 2000s. The election of Benedict XVI has inaugurated a new phase taking distance both from John Paul II' complex reception of Vatican II and from the results of the historical and theological research on Vatican II.
