First, it situates this explanation in relation to other contemporary responses to the problem of natural evil. Second, it charts out the historical development of this view, giving special attention to its articulation in the writings of several prominent 20th-century theologians and Christian thinkers. Finally, it raises several theological principles that commend this view for further evaluation.
