Description
Summary:The author examines the role of the United States in the Middle East since the end of the Cold War. He focuses on the US's involvement in the Arab-Israeli-Palestinian affairs. During the Cold War Israel was of important strategic value to the US and thus received extraordinary financial aid. As Soviet aggression in the region is not likely today there are no reasons why Israel should receive more aid than any other country in the region. Some people argue that Israel is still of strategic importance - not anymore against communism but against Islam. The author objects that it is not Islam but merely a militant part of Islamic fundamentalism which threatens the West, and he points out that it is Israel's policy - its rejection of the UN land-for peace formula - which promotes radicalism and extremism in the region.
