AB In October 1992 Pope John Paul II and hundreds of Latin American bishops and cardinals gathered in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to mark Catholicism's 500 years in the region. In looking to the future, this assembly helped launch a "new evangelization" of the continent, a major goal of John Paul II's papacy. But unlike the results of Medellin and Puebla, the resolutions of Santo Domingo were more rehashing of old ideas than an innovative formulation of ways to meet the challenges facing the church
