Sa popularite va en s'accentuant grace a la notorie grandissante de 64 centres therapeutiques paroissiaux, 11 a Brazzaville, dont le fonctionnement repose sur un compromis original entre un christianisme mystique et le mode de perception local de la maladie: "le Reveil spirituel" en vogue depuis 1961. L'auteur presente l'origine de ce mouvement issu d'une mission evangelique suedoise implantee depuis 1909 dans la region et l'evolution de son influence grandissante jusqu'a la creation du premier centre therapeutique en 1948 ainsi que le mode de fonctionnement de ces centres par une etude de cas: celui du centre d'Ouenze. Ces centres s'adaptent a la demande urbaine, s'opposent au marasme des services publics de soins et affichent ainsi un visage serieux; ils s'opposent egalement aux feticheurs, charlatans par leur honnetete sans failles. L'Eglise catholique apres s'etre interrogee sur le succes de cette orientation prise par l'Eglise protestante qui constitue une serieuse concurrence crea son premier centre en 1973. La crise economique et sociale a Brazzaville favorise ainsi le renouveau chretien et les Eglises chretiennes sont devenues le contre-pouvoir le plus influent avant lequel le gouvernement doit composer.
