| LOK | |0 938 |l Abstract:The Vietnam War poetry of Donald G. Kemp is examined in light of the theories of the relationship between violence and the sacred put forward by René Girard, Walter Burkert, Paul Ricoeur and Northrop Frye. The poetry is seen to record a confrontation with evil that is not susceptible to the kind of absolution usually offered by religious institutions. The violence of the Vietnam War is seen to be grounded in a false motivation, which makes the violence particularly dangerous for the participants in the war who are not shielded from its effects by an effective military ritual. The notion of the sacred that emerges is based upon the poet's sense of the violation of infinite obligations. Thus the only "curing" of violence suggested here is the unflinching telling of a tale of confrontation with evil found not entirely outside of the poet himself. (Source: Robert W. Hough) |8 0 | ||
