LOK | |0 938 |l Abstract: René Girard's theory has yet to be considered in light of non-western materials. In this article I show Girard's theory of mimetic desire and victimage helps us to distinguish a violent and sacrificial strand of the Buddhist tradition from the nonviolent core teachingzs of Buddhism with which it is often confused. I argue that examples of Buddhist nonviolence provide powerful arguments in favor of extending Girard's theory to include a "transformative mimesis" which effects an identification of oppressors with victims and which breaks the cycle of sacrificial violence. After having examined a variety of material from throughout the Buddhist tradition, I examine the self-immolation of the Vietnamese monk Thich Quang-Duc in 1963, at it exemplifies the violent and sacrificial stand of Buddhism. The article concludes with reflections on nonviolent Buddhist tradition, on Martin Luther King Jr., and on Gandhi. While Girard's theory is usefully applied to the Buddhist tradition, its application to the nonviolent aspects of Buddhism calls into question the privileged place Girard accords to the Gospels in world religions.
