| LOK | |0 938 |l Abstract: It is similarity, not difference, that engenders rivalry, conflict, and violence, according to the theory of violence developed by René Girard. This essay proceeds to "un/rival" the Jewish and Christian scriptures by unraveling some of the conventional representations of their similarity. This task is accomplished by dissociating the Christian meaning and significance of the life and death of Jesus from traditional Jewish expectations of a messiah. It is the similarity of Christian claims about Jesus (on the one hand), with Jewish expectations of a messiah (on the other), that has generated centuries of vicious and lethal rivalry between the two traditions. Yet closer examination of the New Testament, as we will see, justifies relinquishing the term "messiah" with reference to Jesus altogether. In a related discussion this essay examines the treatment of Torah and law in Matthew's gospel. Matthew's Christian perspective constitutes a shift from the Jewish perspective; a shift from the categories of prohibition and observance status after Mosaic law, to the prescriptive categories of faith and promise established under the Abrhamic covenant before the advent of the law. In this regard the Matthean Jesus himself deconstructs or unravels the "Old Testament": he fulfills the law by retrieving its precursor in Jewish convenental tradition - the faith of Abraham and God's promises to Abraham and his descendents. Thus with regard to law also, Matthew is not concerned with establishing a "new" testament in rivalry with an "old". It is the difference rather than the similarity between the testaments that concerns him and, with regard to our contemporary hermeneutic interests, it is that difference that un/rivals them.
