LOK |0 938   |l Abstract: This essay examines the distinctive contribution of René Girard to the interpretation of religion through a comparsion of his work with the thought of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur. Each of these thinkers retrieves and rehabilitates the concept of mimesis as central to their interpretation theories. The essay, therefore, probes their understandings of mimesis and the points of similarity and difference between their positions. In contrast to Gadamer, Girard's theory of religion explores the connection between the literary or textual dimension of religion and its social practices. Girard also addresses the problem of violence in religious discourse through the idea of mimesis in a way not explored in Ricoeur's account of narrative mimesis. Having isolated the similarities and differences between Girard, Gadamer, and Ricoeur, the essay concludes with suggestions for the study of religion. (Source: William Schweiker)  |8 0
