Verse 3 of Psalm 121 has kept through the Greek and Latin translations the meaning it has in the original Hebrew: it expresses the unity of the Holy City. Saint Augustine made a misinterpretation by finding in the idipsum of this verse a divine name meaning 'the Selfsame'. This misinterpretation actually goes back to his first encounter with the word in the Psalms, where the Latin version he used made impossible for him to understand the true meaning. To this misinterpretation of Augustine, some translators or commentators have added another, on what he understood, passing from 'the same thing' to 'the very thing', even to 'the very Being'. |
