Summary: | The Pontifical Biblical Commission issued The Inspiration and Truth of Sacred Scripture: The Word That Comes from God and Speaks of God for the Salvation of the World. For the relation of the Old Testament to the New and particularly the truth of Scripture, the PBC advocated what it called canonical exegesis. This article examines the document's treatment of violence in the OT, in particular the law of extermination, as treated in no. 127. It questions the document's affirmation (no. 44) that the old covenant was only "an external law that commands and punishes." Finally, it compares the document's point of view and methodology with the more nuanced views of the early Fathers of the Church. |
