| Summary: | This article deploys the recent assault of Audrey Stevenson at The Potter's House, Fort Worth as an entry point to explore the relationship between the sexualization of and violence against Black women and girls in the Black Church. It argues that the incessant sexual shaming and policing of Black women and girls in Black Churches and communities is grounded in erotophobia and hyper-moralism (Black Church and middle-class tactics used for social and representational control), and more, the Black Church's response to history, specifically North American slavery, rape, breeding, stereotyping, degendering, terror, and broken kinships. What is needed for healing and liberation is not purity codes, sexual silence, governmentality, Black nuclear dictates, or sex and gender regimentation, but rather a new social order and economy of freedom that makes the fullness of Black flesh, breath, expression, and interiority, which consequently includes erotic power and articulation, non-negotiable. |
