Description
Summary:The landscape of marital infidelity has quickly changed. With the advent of social media such as Facebook, many seeking extramarital affairs are doing so with ease. This is a concern for the sanctity many marriage relationships strive to uphold. This study implemented in-depth interviews with married men who exchanged extramarital private Facebook messages with the opposite sex. Findings indicate when emotional and/or sexual content is exchanged by married men with individuals of the opposite sex on Facebook, and that communication is revealed to spouses of married men, a loss of marital trust is incurred on the marital relationship, oftentimes resulting in separation or divorce. Additionally, emotional and/or sexual communication exchanged with the opposite sex through Facebook is labeled as cyberinfidelity by victim-spouses; that is, it is considered to hold equal marital conflict implications as in-person infidelity.
