He started his career as a Bible scholar, and biblical exegetics was his original field. However, changes in Catholic exegetics at the time of the pontificate of Pius X forced him to concentrate on the much different, albeit less dangerous, field of oriental studies. The present study is devoted to the period of his studies at the École biblique (1895-1897) that ended in a rift with a dramatic aftermath. The reasons for the conflict between Musil and the director of the École biblique Marie-Joseph Lagrange are then clarified on the basis of freshly revealed documents.

Il a commencé sa carrière comme exégète de l’Ancien Testament et l’exégèse biblique fut son orientation scientifique première avant que les transformations de l’exégèse catholique, pendant le pontificat de Pie X, ne le forcent à changer son champ d’études vers une discipline moins dangereuse, l’orientalisme. L’étude présente est consacrée aux temps de ses études a l’École biblique (1895-1897), lesquelles se terminèrent par une rupture suivie d’un épilogue dramatique. Les raisons du conflit entre Musil et le directeur de l’École biblique, Marie-Joseph Lagrange, sont clarifiées sur la base de documents récents découverts dans des archives tchèques.
