Σύνοψη:At a session of the Thirty-First General Congregation on 20 October 1966, Father General Pedro Arrupe delivered an allocution to the assembled Jesuits. It was a private talk and he asked the congregants to keep it secret. The records of the congregation mention that an address was given but say nothing about its content or the reasons that prompted it. Based on some documents left on his death by the Secretary of the Congregation, Fr. Pedro Mä Abellán, the author of this essay shows that in this speech Father Arrupe disclosed to the congregation a draft letter from a concerned Pope Paul VI, who worried that various dangers threatened the Society. The pope asked the general to convey his concerns to the congregation so that the fathers would keep them in mind as they proceeded with their work. The pope and the general agreed that the letter would not be sent formally or entered into the records of the Congregation, and that instead its message would be conveyed verbally. This essay provides some remarks about the exchange and the circumstances in which it took place. (English)
