Description
Summary:‘The Vision' is a previously unpublished dream manuscript collected and preserved by Mary Bosanquet Fletcher. It emerged out of the transatlantic world of early Methodism, in which dreams played crucial personal and communal religious roles, and in which colonial contact had foregrounded the fate of the unevangelized American Indians as a pressing theological question. In the dream, an angel guides the dreamer through a post-mortal paradise and shows her the spirits commissioned to evangelize the American Indians who had died without the Christian Gospel. ‘The Vision' provides a rich resource for exploring theology, experience, community, and divine communication in the early history of Methodism.
