This article, by studying a specific bishop, namely Bishop Fulbert of Chartres (1006-1028) and his administration of church property, challenges this statement. In the first paragraph, Fulbert's efforts in defending church property against invaders are looked at. The second paragraph examines Fulbert's correspondence with Bishop Franco of Paris in which Fulbert's views on appropriate church property management can be discerned: a bishop should try to recuperate previously lost church property and should not squander it by alienating it. Lastly, the third paragraph traces Fulbert's views back to regulations in ninth-century legal collections, which he had at his disposal and which contained ideas and concepts harking back to Late Antiquity and the Merovingian period. In doing so, this article tries to give another example of a pre-Gregorian bishop who handled church property conscientiously, influenced by longstanding ideas on church property. | ||
