Si le culte dynastique des Ptolémées semble avoir assez systématiquement disparu dans cette région en même temps que leur domination, en revanche les cultes que certaines cités grecques instituèrent de leur propre chef pour les rois d'Égypte connurent un sort plus contrasté : une partie d'entre eux survécut, l'autre s'éteignit. Ces honneurs cultuels étaient souvent décidés non pour complaire au pouvoir dominant, mais par reconnaissance envers un souverain qui avait prodigué des bienfaits à la communauté, sentiment qui constitue une cause possible de leur pérennité dans certaines cités, malgré les vicissitudes politiques. | ||
| 520 | |a The following study examines the fate of the cult of the sovereigns against the backdrop of the withdrawal of the Lagid dynasty from the Aegean Sea Basin area, chiefly in Asia Minor. The dynastic cult of the Ptolemies seems to have disappeared rather systematically from that region together with their rule. However, the cults established by some city-states of their own accord for the kings of Egypt experienced a more diverse fate: some of them survived, others died off. Such cultic honors were often decided not in order to please the dominant power, but rather to acknowledge the sovereign's benefactions to the community. This kind of gratitude is a possible cause for their continuation in some cities, despite political upheavals. | ||
