AB The author of 1 John addresses the serious schism within the community of faith. As he calls his readers back to the received Johannine tradition, he reminds them that sin has the power to damage their fellowship with each other and their fellowship with God and Jesus. He argues that sin is still a reality in the life of the Christian that must be dealt with, and he uses the concept of sin to characterize the divisive apostasy of those who have left the community.
