| 520 | |a It is often found to be essential that nurses develop sensitivity to the spirituality of their patients, are able to give basic spiritual care and can make referrals to specialized spiritual caregivers (chaplains) when needed. At two wards in a Belgian hospital, we tested if the revised screening instrument SPIRIT would enhance the attention given to these elements. For six weeks, each newly admitted patient had a conversation with a nurse about four screening questions. Following this pilot test, we interviewed patients, nurses and chaplains. This article offers practice-based insights into several factors that facilitate or interfere in the use of the screening instrument and that might stimulate nurses to refer to a chaplain. Nurses are in need of time, emotional space, perceived competence, personal spirituality and a certain attitude towards the patients' life stance. A trusting nurse-patient relationship, willingness to talk about spirituality and the trust in and image of the chaplain also influence the way the screening is conducted and perceived. Interviewees listed the following advantages of the screening: integration of spiritual care, eye-opener to some patients, easier referral. However, the screening also has some drawbacks: artificial, time-consuming, possibly fewer referrals, probably triggers unnecessary emotions and the impossibility to screen every patient at any given time. | ||
| 520 | |a Il est de la plus haute importance que les infirmières prennent en compte la spiritualité des patients afin de leur prodiguer des soins spirituels adéquats et de les référer au besoin. Deux départements d'un hôpital en Belgique ont été évalués afin de vérifier si l'outil de dépistage Spirit contribue à améliorer l'éveil au volet spirituel. Pendant deux mois, chaque nouveau patient participa à une rencontre avec une infirmière portant sur quatre questions filtres. À la suite de cette expérience pilote, les patients, les infirmières et les aumôniers furent interviewés. On a relevé plusieurs facteurs susceptibles d'influencer la façon d'utiliser l'outil de dépistage et la décision de recommander le patient à l'aumônier: le temps, l'espace émotif, le niveau de compétence, la spiritualité de l'infirmière, l'attitude à l'égard du regard d'autrui, le niveau de confiance au sein de la relation, l'ouverture face à la spiritualité et le degré de confiance envers l'aumônier. Les personnes rencontrées en entrevue notent que l'outil de dépistage présente des avantages: l'intégration des soins spirituels, un éveil des patients au volet spirituel, une facilitation du processus de référence, mais aussi des inconvénients: artificiel, coûteux en temps, déclencheur d'émotions possiblement inutiles, quasi-impossibilité de cerner chaque patient en tout temps. | ||
