Im Zentrum stehen hierbei das Giftorakel der zentralafrikanischen Zande sowie die arabisch-islamische Geomantie. Dieses Unternehmen hat den Zweck, drei Thesen bezüglich Medien religiöser Kommunikation zu erproben, die sich dem Autor aus der Auseinandersetzung mit Ritualen und speziell Divinationsformen aus unterschiedlichen soziokulturellen Kontexten ergeben haben:1) Divinationsmedien unterscheiden sich in frappierender Weise von Medien der Alltagskommunikation; 2) diese besonderen Medien ermöglichen eine Kommunikation zwischen Wirklichkeitsbereichen (i. S. der Strukturen der Lebenswelt [Schütz/Luckmann]) und verkörpern damit ein fundamentales „Dazwischen“; 3) von einer Innenperspektive betrachtet, werden Divinationsmedien oft als aktive Kommunikationspartner konzipiert und wahrgenommen – selbst wenn diese aus einer Beobachterperspektive unbelebte Paraphernalia sind.Um eine Grundlage für die Plausibilisierung dieser Thesen zu schaffen, ist anfänglich von Kommunikation und Medien sowie den Besonderheiten religiöser Kommunikation und Medien religiöser Kommunikation die Rede. Auf die detaillierte Beschreibung der Divinationspraktiken folgen ihre kommunikationstheoretische Analyse sowie eine zeichen- und medientheoretische Deutung dieser Ergebnisse.Das Ziel dieses Aufsatzes liegt neben der Plausibilisierung seiner Thesen auch darin, Impulse für die religionswissenschaftliche Debatte um Medien, Materialität und Performanz zu liefern. Gerade in den Ergebnissen der Divinationsforschung sieht David Morgan, wie er jüngst in Material religion schrieb, ein ertragreiches Feld. | ||
| 520 | |a This article examines divinatory practices in a communication and media theoretical framework. Thereby, it focuses on the Poison Oracle of Central African Azande and Arab-Islamic geomancy. This analysis intends to test three theses, which came to the author by investigating rituals and divinatory practices from different sociocultural contexts: 1) Media of divination differ remarkably from media of everyday communication. 2) These particular media establish and secure communication between different domains of reality (according to The Structures of the Life-World [Schütz/Luckmann]). Hence, they embody a fundamental betwixt-and-between. 3) These particular media are conceived and apprehended from an insider perspective as vivid communication partners – even though they are inanimate paraphernalia from an outsider perspective. Inspecting these theses, the author proceeds as follows: The first section is about communication and media as well as the particular features of religious communication and media. Subsequently, this is followed by a detailed description of the divinatory practices as well as an analysis of the communicational structures and media. Finally, the article ends with semiotic interpretations of the findings of the previous sections. One objective, beside this plausibility check, is to contribute to the debates about media, materiality and performance in the field of religious studies. In research results from the subfield of divinatory practices, as David Morgan sees it, lie productive inputs for debates in our field in general. Therefore, this article presents possible generalizations of the theses for other media of religious communication in an outlook section. | ||
