A few attempted to move beyond this, moving from the pulpit to the political platform with the aim of entering parliament. This study seeks to use the career of one such figure, Baptist minister Richard Foulkes Griffiths, as a means of shedding light on the formation of a Political Dissenter, his career progression, entry to the ministry, ministerial life, exit from the ministry, and the failure of his efforts to enter parliament. The stereotypical image of political dissent' as a monolithic entity is challenged, and the role of denominational rivalry in politics explored. Light, too, is shed on the key role Griffiths played in the Union of New Connexion of General Baptists and the Baptist Union. | ||
