Normalerweise wird Barths Antwort auf Bonhoeffers Kritik an seiner Theologie als abweisend und engstirnig umschrieben, so als hätte Barth die Zweideutigkeit der Formulierung „Offenbarungspositivismus“ und Bonhoeffers Erläuterung als Gelegenheit begrüßt, Bonhoeffers Kritik insgesamt abweisen zu können. Hier wird gezeigt, dass Barth ganz im Gegenteil Bonhoeffers Kritik durchaus ernstgenommen hat und sich bis zum Ende seiner Tätigkeit mit ihr auseinandersetzte. Darüberhinaus zeigt der Beitrag, dass Barth Bonhoeffers Anliegen und Thesen in den Gefängnisbriefen weit besser verstanden hat, als man normalerweise annimmt, und sogar besser als viele andere Interpreten Bonhoeffers. Insgesamt entfaltet der Aufsatz Bonhoeffers Kritik an Barth, Barths Verständnis von Bonhoeffers Gedankengang und schließlich Barths Urteil desselben sowie seine eigene Alternative.
