Summary: | In the 19th and 20th century, religious education represented a major site of conflict for those involved in teacher training. In this article, the author discusses two opposite lines of development in public teacher education in the cantons of Bern and Lucerne in the 19th and 20th century. The curriculum defining schoolbooks were at the centre of political debates and thus drew attention from the various protagonists. This contribution discusses the conflicts and debates that occurred in two teacher institutions Bern-Hofwyl (Bern) and Hitzkirch (Lucerne) from the middle of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century. The author shows how the different state and ecclesiastical authorities dealt with the religiously marked pedagogical concepts. The protestant liberal forces were successful in Bern, whereas the catholic conservative forces gained the upper hand in Lucerne. While representatives on both sides believed their religion was founded upon reason, they disagreed on what that entailed. |
