520 | |a In this commentary on proceedings at the British and Irish Association for Practical Theology (BIAPT) conference at the University of Cardiff, July 2015 on Public Theology, I consider different models of theological reflection on the common good. In contrast to approaches that begin from Christian tradition or Biblical literature in order to derive exemplary teaching for contemporary practice, I advance a reading of the Pauline literature in the New Testament as a prototypical form of contextual theology, which emerges from and returns to the practical dilemmas of discipleship and Christian witness. In further consideration of the nature and task of Public Theology, I characterize it as embodying both an apocalyptic and apologetic imagination: a vision of the common good that inspires and motivates transformational action, but which is also enjoined to bear witness to the hope that is within you (1 Peter 3:15). Public theology is the praxis of both showing and telling. | ||
