Summary: | This essay deals with the iconographie motif of Christ carrying the cross in the context of the vision of La Storta, which Ignatius of Loyola experienced in 1537. The motif appeared frequently in the spiritual literature of the Society of Jesus, and was included in the first illustrated edition of the Spiritual Exercises. Based on a range of written and visual sources, the study shows how representations of the vision at La Storta - an event that was central to Jesuit self-understanding - drew on existing devotional motifs relating to the carrying of the cross in the development of the Society's own iconographie programme. The allusion to Christ carrying the cross in representations of Ignatius's vision made this motif an ideal model for imitation in the Society, such that the Way of the Cross became a cornerstone of Jesuit spirituality and identity.
