RT Article T1 Rereading the Inscriptions of the ‘Throne of Astarte’ and the Sidonian Obelisk JF Journal of Semitic studies VO 61 IS 2 SP 319 OP 325 A1 Lipiński, Edward 1930- LA English PB Oxford University Press YR 2016 UL https://ixtheo.de/Record/156319340X AB The photographs of the ‘Throne of Astarte’ inscription from the Tyrian mainland, published by J.R. Davila and B. Zuckerman, suggest a new reading of the end of its line 1. Instead of a sanctuary, the text refers to the gate of the dedicator's property, placed under the protection of the goddess. The Sidonian obelisk inscription is dedicated to the god Shalāmān by a high official, whose title seems to refer to the Phoenician area to the south of the Nahr el-Kebīr. It qualifies him as the prefect or sub-prefect of the province Beyond-Safita, which is the name of an important strategic site north of the river. DO 10.1093/jss/fgw011
