I show that Gregory’s view of the heart undergoes a significant development, and argue that this development is caused by his particular reading of the beatitude ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God’. In essence, I show that Gregory shifts from a predominantly physical understanding of the heart as a bodily organ to a more spiritualized understanding of the heart as the means through which one comes into communion with God.
