Summary: | In classical Arabic literature, adab and history are closely related. Collections such as al-Masʿūdī’s Murūj al-dhahab, Ibn Qutayba’s Kitāb al-Maʿārif or the Muʿjam al-buldān by Yāqūt are proper hybrids of history and adab: History often includes adab approaches, and adab regularly incorporates historical akhbār. The multivolume encyclopedia al-ʿIqd al-farīd, “the Unique Necklace,” composed by the Andalusī Ibn ʿAbd Rabbih (246/860-328/940) fits very well into the adab ideal of cultural broadness. In addition to numerous historical anecdotes, the ʿIqd al-farīd incorporates a lengthy and very peculiar monographic section on caliphal history, an early example of history in adab. These passages have received little attention in the study of early Arabic historiography so far; however, they definitely deserve a closer investigation. |
