Its first is documentary. Mahomed and Esack show that antihomophobic movements in the West both participate in the marginalization of Muslims, by viewing them as enemies who need reforming, and ignore the rich precolonial history of Islamic cultures, which may have disapproved of same-sex desire and practices but did not pathologize them.
