The class is centered on the question of what it means to live “the good life” in an era of energy descent and impending catastrophic climate disruption. The reference to pleasure and pain is meant to highlight what I see as a pressing need to reevaluate our culture's dominant notions of happiness and convenience—or what Rob Dietz aptly calls “the tyranny of comfort” in our lives (2011). What are we sacrificing in order to maintain the status quo of our supposedly good lives?... | ||
