Such contestation begins long before one turns to the topic of the environment. Before, therefore, I turn to the subject proper of this roundtable, will illustrate what I mean by beginning at the very beginning of the academic study of indigenous traditions. By this, I mean terminology at the most granular level.Are the systems studied to be called Native or Indigenous? Both words carry with them the baggage of imperialism. Are we to call the subjects of our study “religions,” “religious traditions,” or “spiritualities”? Does calling them a “religion” impose...
