Such contestation begins long before one turns to the topic of the environment. Before, therefore, I turn to the subject proper of this roundtable, will illustrate what I mean by beginning at the very beginning of the academic study of indigenous traditions. By this, I mean terminology at the most granular level.Are the systems studied to be called Native or Indigenous? Both words carry with them the baggage of imperialism.
