Sumario:The life of Professor Norman Porteous spanned three centuries (1898-2003). He preserved letters and cards sent him over 83 years from many distinguished correspondents in academic and public life. His studies in Germany and ties with German scholars were very important to him; and their letters constitute an important primary resource of mid-20th century activity and thought. In this article, these letters are considered in their wider context.
