Sumario: | After a brief outline of the history of archaeological investigation of Galilee and the interpretative issues that have arisen, the article focuses on recent discussions of the region in the Roman period. The aim is to suggest ways in which this evidence may help in providing a fuller context for the ministry of Jesus there. The results of various surveys are discussed in relation to the issue of the ethnic make up of the region. This is followed by assessments of the alleged 'urbanisation' of Galilee and the nature of the village culture there. |
