The article argues that John ultimately holds that God can be seen, that the passages that seem to deny this only deny the possibility of unmediated access to the Father, apart from Jesus, and that John has developed three ways of securing God’s transcendence, despite his visibility: (i) the vision of God is only available through Jesus; (ii) the vision of God is climaxed precisely where God seems to be absent, namely in Jesus’ crucifixion; and (iii) the vision of God in Jesus’ crucifixion runs counter to human expectations, and is therefore only recognizable with hindsight. Thus, John is able to affirm both God’s visibility and transcendence. | ||
