Before offering a brief sketch of the historical Jesus that takes into account the key importance of his miracle working, the article evaluates some of the ways Jesus is described when his miracle working is allowed a significant place in his ministry. In arguing that the miracles are the interpretive key for the historical Jesus the article attempts to identify miracle-working as that feature of Jesus’ ministry the absence (or removal) of which would fundamentally (and mistakenly) alter a reconstruction of the historical Jesus, and miracle working as that aspect of the historical Jesus that significantly elucidates the general character of his ministry and brings coherence to other key features of what are generally recognized to be inalienable to his life and ministry. Jesus can describe his ministry in terms of conducting miracles, he considered himself primarily a miracle worker, his miracles defined who he was, they realized the kingdom of God and contributed to his arrest. | ||

Avant de donner un bref aperçu du Jésus historique en prenant en compte l’importance décisive de son activité miraculeuse, l’article évalue quelques-unes des manières de décrire Jésus quand une place significative est accordée aux miracles qu’il opère dans son ministère. En affirmant que les miracles sont la clé d’interprétation du Jésus historique, l’article cherche à identifier l’activité miraculeuse comme la marque du ministère de Jésus, faute (ou absence) de quoi, toute reconstruction du Jésus historique serait fondamentalement (et de manière erronée) affectée et l’activité miraculeuse comme cet aspect du Jésus historique qui éclaire de manière décisive ce qui caractérise tout son ministère et apporte une cohérence à d’autres traits majeurs, généralement reconnus comme indissociables de sa vie et de son ministère. Jésus peut dire que son ministère consistait à faire des miracles; il se considérait lui-même d’abord comme un thaumaturge; ses miracles ont dit qui il était; ils sont la réalisation du Royaume de Dieu et ils ont contribué à le faire arrêter. | ||
