Description
Summary:In six concise theses the author demonstrates the importance and the significance of art and aesthetics for theology and the presence of Christian churches in the contemporary world and culture. This is partly surprising, because the Christian religion is mainly based on oral testimonies and scripture. The Jewish and Christian traditions even insist in a prohibition of images. But this has to be understood not as a prohibition of visual art but as a prohibition of idolatry. After a long and painful process of alienation between traditional Christian symbols and modern art and culture, today there seem to be more opportunities for modern art to be open to religious witnesses and the expression of religious yearning. This opens new possibilities for the life of Christian churches and their pastoral and liturgical practice.
