Description
Summary:How can an esteemed and fruitful dialogue with the testimonies of modern and contemporary art be carried out by the churches in a secular society that is formed by different world-views and mindsets? How can the manifold positions of contemporary art be at first understood and further be investigated for their religious and spiritual qualities? The article by Monika Leisch-Kiesl is not only based on her many years of examination of these questions as a theologian and art historian, but also on a dispute on the question of the relationship between art and church or art and religion that she guided at a conference five years ago and that she had reflected on since then. As in her own academic work and teaching, the author has always stressed the impact of the right questions and a transparent methodology. Her goal here is also to formulate some basic considerations on the theme of art and religion that has already been discussed in manifold ways. This rather rational statement will also support focussing on gender questions with a helpful methodology.
