| LOK | |0 938 |l Abstract: Girard's challenge to New Testament scholars is just that he approaches the gospels with a new hermeneutic informed by a fully rationalized theory of religion. His approach may be compared formally with Bultmann's program of demythologizing the kerygma on the basis of then current views of the history of religions. But new views on religion from a human sciences perspective are quite different, Girard's theory, in conversation with these, introduces a reading of the gospels for which New Testament scholars may not be prepared. The essay offers an analysis of Girard's readings of the gospels, presents a contrastive reading more in line with the canons of historical-literary criticism, and offers a reflection upon the disparities. Girard's reading of the gospels is resisted. But his theory of religion is nevertheless found to be poignantly apropos to early Christian social formation. (Source: Religion Index) |8 0 | ||
