| LOK | |0 938 |l Abstract: A careful reading of the final parable of the gourd reveals that Jonah's reluctance to prophesy to Nineveh is not simply a lack of compassion, as modern readings argue. It is also anti-Jewish. The Jews are those who have departed, who have given up the sacrificial or Ninevitian ways of their surroundings to live by the Torah, the Law of anti-idolatry. Jonah makes an idol of this law itself. This diachronic indentity between Israel and Nineveh helps us to explain the scriptural and liturgical contexts in which the story is read. As an account of the nature of the prophetic spirit itself, the Jonah story reveals the force of Judaism as a collection of rituals in which the substitutive, arbitrary and expulsive nature of sacrificial gestures are made progressively overt on the social level. On the individual level, the condition of Jewish life is revealed as teshuvah or repentance, the abandonment of sin and return to the ways of God. (ed. Fr.J.).
