Mission and migrationare two points of departure for such processes. This essay focuses on the Atlanticslave trade as a dramatic example of enforced ritual change. Christian and Islamicmission to Western Africa had already resulted in processes of ritual change inWestern Africa, and the essay analyzes forms of ritual adaptation and modificationin the framework of missionary encounters. It then turns to forms of ritual expressivityand creativity among slaves in North America. In the context of the Christianizationof (former) Afro-American slaves, sources attest to various forms of performativeand ceremonial amalgamations at funerals, baptisms, and festivals. Theessay also looks at conversion events such as camp meetings and the ring shout aswell as the prominence of music, dance, and embodied rhythms. In a formal/systematic manner, the article provides definitions of the following modes ofritual transfer: retention, assimilation, interference, mutation, substitution, integration,and aggregation. | ||
