520 | |a Although the process of secularisation began in Portugal in the mid-eighteenth century, Catholicism has shown in certain historical periods the power to influence and penetrate Portuguese society. In other periods, it lost its power and it seems that it was condemned to insignificance. This means that we may be able to speak about a kind of fluctuation between phases of secularization and de-secularization in Portuguese religious history. In order to substantiate this hypothesis, I will describe how Portuguese Catholicism was able to cultivate some worldly skills mainly directed at: a) intervention in ethical or social questions; b) intervening, correcting or criticising political or economical decisions; c) the preservation of traditional beliefs and customs; d) the stabilisation of Portuguese identities. These skills will be compared in four different time-periods with completely diverse social and political conditions. Consequently, the key questions in this article are the following: Is secularization necessarily a linear and irreversible process? By what means has traditional Portuguese Roman Catholicism managed to preserve its vitality and its position in a rather secularised environment? In what way do »secular« and »religious« spheres encroach on each other in a modern European society? | ||
