Summary: | This article deals with the current debate on reforms of the Buddhist monkhood in Thailand and should be placed within the broader context of the modernization of Thai society, which gained momentum during the last half century by the rapid industrialization and economic growth and affected Buddhist norms and values that sustained traditional society. The paper focuses on the views of Phra Paisal Visalo, a strongly socially engaged Thai monk, who has analyzed the situation of the present Buddhist community in his country and tries to develop a remedy. I give an outline of his main views, but I do not subscribe to all details. |
