In the publications of the Republican People's Party (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi; CHP) founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk statements about the nation's leader, the »People's Spirit« and the civilizationary mission of the Turks are found which express an explicit religious-like character. Often such symbolic expressions use the islamic tradition and are connected with the divine power of creation or prophethood. Even allusions to polytheistic pre-islamic ideas are conspicious. As it is futile to look for a systematic alternative description of the fundamental transcendental questions, e.g. the problem of man's origin or life after death, it is difficult to decide whether an author aims at propagating a new humanistic form of religion or if it is merely to make use of Islamic notions for mobilizing the reader in the direction of the nation-state's new goals. In the second part the results are compared with certain functionalistic theories of Civil Religion. Besides Robert Bellah and Niklas Luhmann, it is Emile Dürkheims theory of the religious nature of society that seems to be instructive. Eric Voegelins conception of »Political Religion« illustrates the sacralisation of »Führer« and »Volk«.
