Summary: | The academic life of Walter Baetke took place under historical conditions in Germany, which were dominated by the two totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century. After his successful defense against the utilization of his ideas by the protagonists of the NS-Ideology, he was confronted with no less interest in the results of the academic Study of Religions soon after 1945, this time by the leading ideology of the official Marxism-Leninism, the so called »real existing socialism«. In both cases the discipline of Religious Studies (Religionswissenschaft) was in danger of being misused for political purposes, and the concerned scholars were tempted giving way to this danger in order to secure their academic existence and to increase their social influence. The article gives references for how Walter Baetke met this challenge and how he could resist these temptations without risking his professional and social existence. |
