| Summary: | Meister Eckhart's theology at the whole is a Biblical one. Characteristically, this can be seen in his sermons. One of his evidently authentic preachings was devoted to Jac 1:17: »every perfect gift is from above«. Here, gift for Eckhart is the expression of a neoplatonic concept of being. The giving God and the receiving creature are not seen as communicative counterparts, but the latter is fully dependent in all its being from its heavenly creator. This aspect of a theology of creation has its Christological equivalent: lt is Christ himself who brings man to being by the birth of God in his soul. From this, gift means to expect all from God and nothing from man himself. Pure »empfenclicheit«, responsiveness, constitutes human condition also in ethical regard. Giving something for the neighbor, in this respect, is not a question of quantity, but of right attitude, that is full un-selfishness as the only basis to define the relationship to God and men. |
