Riepilogo:The author shows that political manifestations of Islam have evinced considerable diversity. He takes up the relationship between the basic tenets of Islam and "political" activity and delineates the patterns of such activity by different strata in different frameworks, i.e., orthodox Sunni Islam as opposed to Sufi or dervish orders. He also addresses himself to the functions Islam has had for different groups. He notes its instrumental utilization by the rulers on the one hand, and the fuel it gave to protest movements on the other. Furthermore, he carefully distinguishes between the different roles played in political manifestations of Islam by such religious leaders as "ulama", mahdis, skaykhs and others. (DÜI-Asd)
