This article examines the lives of Adolf and Mary through correspondence held in the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It begins by describing the family relationships of both Adolf and Polly, then briefly describes the sources in Bethlehem and in doing so questions the representative nature of these sources. The article then examines the family, religious and social relationships evident within the correspondence. It particularly focuses on the correspondence between Polly and her sister-in-law Maria Heyde, who was stationed in the West Himalyas, thereby describing roles that female missionaries could play in maintaining global networks in the nineteenth century. |
