Σύνοψη: | Adolf and Mary (‘Polly') Hartmann were Moravian missionaries on the Ebenezer Mission station in the Colony of Victoria, Australia, from 1873 to 1896. Their lives were global in character, with Adolf living in six different countries on four continents and Polly living in five different countries on three continents. This article examines the lives of Adolf and Mary through correspondence held in the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It begins by describing the family relationships of both Adolf and Polly, then briefly describes the sources in Bethlehem and in doing so questions the representative nature of these sources. The article then examines the family, religious and social relationships evident within the correspondence. It particularly focuses on the correspondence between Polly and her sister-in-law Maria Heyde, who was stationed in the West Himalyas, thereby describing roles that female missionaries could play in maintaining global networks in the nineteenth century. |
