Summary: | At the end of January 1704 August Hermann Francke (Halle) visited Baroness Henriette Catharina von Gersdorff in Hennersdorf, her residence as a widow. This visit is generally described as a friendly, idyllic encounter of two pious people. With the help of extensive research, Teigeler illuminates the dramatic background of this meeting. The baroness had expressed doubts (dubia) about Francke's pedagogical and theological opinions. When she received no explanation in response, Francke having taken the view that he was not obliged to answer her at all, she ceased her intensive support for Francke and his work and founded a residence for noble ladies of her own in Altenburg. This represented serious competition for Frankce's work. The meeting in January 1704, brokered by Baron von Canstein, was intended to persuade the baroness to recommence her support for Halle -- both financially and in terms of personal advocacy. In accordance with diplomatic and aristocratic custom, the meeting took a 'moderate' course, but the outcome was anything but the desired mutual 'godly refreshment'. Teigeler therefore dates one of the roots of the later tensions between Halle and Herrnhut back to this early period. |
